Total steel imports for the month fell by 16.7% m/m

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), US steelmakers reduced their imports of rolled steel by 15.9% year-on-year – to 1.184 million tonnes in September 2025.

Total steel imports (rolled products and semi-finished products) for the month fell by 16.7% month-on-month to 1.56 million tons.

The largest volume of imports was hot-dip galvanized rolled steel – 129,710 tons (-0.8% month-on-month), products for the oil industry – 108,320 tons (-30.5% month-on-month), line pipes – 93.11 thousand tons (+26.6% m/m), and tinplate – 93.22 thousand tons (+2.1% m/m). Finished products accounted for 75.9% of total imports for the month.

In January-September, the US reduced its imports of rolled steel by 12.5% compared to the same period in 2024, to 15.09 million tonnes. Total steel imports amounted to 20.29 million tonnes (-8.9% y-o-y). The main volumes of supplies were products for the oil industry – 1.53 million tons (+14.5% y-o-y), hot-dip galvanized rolled steel – 1.39 million tons (-41% y-o-y), and cold-rolled flat products – 1.18 million tons (-20.7% y-o-y).

The main sources of steel imports to the US in January-September 2025 are Canada, Brazil, and Mexico – 3.72 million tons (-25.8% y-o-y), 3.33 million tons (-10.4% y-o-y) and 2.37 million tons (-7.1% y-o-y), respectively.

In 2024, the US increased its imports of rolled steel by 3.7% compared to 2023, to 22.5 million tons. Total steel imports (rolled products and semi-finished products) for the year increased by 2.5% y-o-y – to 28.86 million tons. The main sources of steel imports to the US in 2024 were Canada, Brazil, and Mexico – 6.56 million tons, 4.49 million tons, and 3.52 million tons, respectively.

Steel production in the US in 2024 fell by 2.4% compared to 2023, to 79.5 million tons. Overall, global steel production for the year amounted to 1.84 billion tons, down 0.9% year-on-year.
