Steel billet is a product obtained by casting molten steel made in a steel-making furnace. It is a very important raw material in the steel industry and the basis for making steel products. Steel billets can be mainly divided into two types from the manufacturing process: die casting billets and continuous casting billets. The mold casting process has been basically eliminated due to shortcomings such as low production efficiency, high energy consumption, and high cost. Continuous casting billet is a billet produced through continuous casting technology. It has the advantages of good surface quality and uniform internal structure. It is the main method of current steel billet production.
Steel billets have various shapes and can be mainly divided into two types: slabs and square billets. The ratio of the cross-section width and height of the slab is large, and it is mainly used for rolling plates; the cross-section width and height of the square billet are equal or have little difference, and are mainly used for rolling steel sections, wire rods, etc. The specifications and sizes of steel billets vary depending on the production process and use, but they generally have larger volume and weight to facilitate subsequent rolling processing.
The production process of steel billet mainly includes three main steps: ironmaking, steelmaking and casting:
1. Ironmaking: First, pig iron is extracted from iron ore. Pig iron is one of the main raw materials for steelmaking, and it contains high levels of carbon and other impurities.
2. Steelmaking: During the steelmaking process, pig iron, scrap steel, alloys and other materials enter the steelmaking furnace together. Excess carbon and other impurities are removed through oxidation reactions, while appropriate amounts of alloying elements are added to adjust the composition and properties of the steel billet. After steelmaking is completed, high-temperature molten steel is obtained.
3. Casting: Molten steel undergoes a casting process to form a steel billet. At present, the main casting process is the continuous casting process, which uses continuous casting technology to directly cast molten steel into billets with a certain shape and size. Continuous casting billet has the advantages of good surface quality and uniform internal structure, and is the main method of current billet production. In contrast, the traditional mold casting process has been gradually eliminated due to shortcomings such as low production efficiency, high energy consumption, and high cost.
As an important raw material, steel billets are widely used in many fields:
1. Construction industry: Steel billets can be used to produce various construction steel materials, such as rebar, round steel, square steel, etc. These steel materials are widely used in the construction field to build infrastructure such as houses, bridges, roads, etc., and are of great significance to ensure the stability and safety of buildings.
2. Machinery manufacturing industry: Steel billets are also widely used in the machinery manufacturing industry. It can be processed into various mechanical parts, such as bearings, gears, crankshafts, etc. These parts are important components of mechanical equipment and play a vital role in the normal operation and performance of mechanical equipment.
3. Automobile manufacturing industry: In the automobile manufacturing industry, steel billets are used to produce automobile parts such as frames, wheels, and doors. With the continuous development of the automobile industry, the performance requirements for automobile materials are becoming higher and higher. Steel billets play an increasingly important role in the automobile manufacturing industry due to their high strength, lightweight, and easy processing.
4. Shipbuilding and navigation industry: In the shipbuilding and navigation industry, steel billets are used to produce hull structural parts, ship bridges, propellers, etc. Ships need to navigate in complex and changeable marine environments, so they have high requirements on the strength and corrosion resistance of their structural materials. Steel billet meets this demand with its excellent properties and has become an important material in the shipbuilding and navigation industry.
5. Other fields: In addition, steel billets are also widely used in many fields such as energy, transportation, petrochemical industry, etc. For example, in the energy field, steel billets can be used to produce transmission towers, pipelines, etc. ; in the transportation field, steel billets can be used to produce railway tracks, vehicle parts, etc.
To sum up, as the basic raw material in the steel industry, steel billets has mature production technology and wide application. With the advancement of science and technology and the development of industry, the application fields of steel billets will continue to expand and deepen.
